Maui.
In a word, paradise. Voted "Best Island in the World" an unprecendented 12 years running by Condé Nast Traveler magazine, nowhere captures the imagination like this jewel of the pacific. An island of majestic mountains and sun-drenched beaches, this is a place where dreams come true. Why not follow your dream?

Maui truly has something for everyone. Ocean lovers can savor Maui's abundance of great snorkeling, SCUBA diving, kayaking, and surfing spots, as well as windsurfing at world famous Ho'okipa Beach. Topside, Maui has championship golf courses, miles and miles of hiking trails, award-winning restaurants and a world class cultural center. Maui's diverse population and rich cultural heritage make it a true melting pot of Polynesian, Eastern, and Western traditions.

Hawai'ian legend holds that the island's rich history began when the demigod Maui, the trickster, pulled the islands of Hawai'i from the sea with his great fishing hook. The first settlers came from the islands of Tahiti, bringing coconut and pigs to the islands, and living much the way their ancestors did for hundreds of years. King Kamehameha I united the islands under one kindgom in 1810, a feat for which he is remembered as "Kamehameha the Great". Modern Hawai'ian history began on January 20, 1778 when Captain James Cook's expedition made its first contact with the Hawai'ian people on the islands of Kauai and Ni'ihau. Over the next hundred years, newcomers from around the globe immigrated to Hawai'i to work in the burgeoning sugar industry.

After western contact, Hawai'i became a sought after desination for wealthy vacationers, and for whaling ships which established Maui as the "Whaling Capital of the Pacific". Old Lahaina Town, on Maui's west coast, was once a major whaling port and it's rich heritage is celebrated in museums and living historical sites. Lahaina was also once King Kamehameha's ruling seat for the Kingdom of Hawai'i

Maui's first major resort area was Ka'anapali on the western shores of the island, in the 1970's. Since then, tourism has replaced agriculture as the primary industry, and Maui has grown into a premier vacation destination. Two million visitors come to this island paradise each year, and some decide to stay, to call Maui home. Are you next?
